Love of Life, by Jack London

Here is an exciting collection of frozen north short stories by the great author, Jack London.  Each of the short stories has a depth to them that in this abbreviated day they could be published separately as individual novels.

Because Call of the Wild was so wildly successful we sometimes forget that Jack London had many other titles of wildly successful books.  At a mere penny per word it is excusable that Jack London produced some work that was less than perfect and fell to the wayside, but as he began to add notches to his belt to accommodate a larger girth, his natural genius was given the time it needed to produce exceedingly great works.  This is a collection of truly great works.  RIGHT Click on the picture, and download your copy to your own computer.

Gold Fever is the insane compulsion to set aside the little diamonds we already have -- and tear off across parts dangerous and unknown to reach the latest gold strike.  "The Cure for Gold Fever" is Lin Stone's funniest work so far.  It is the obviously true life story of how he cured himself forever of gold fever.

Hitler stories are a fascination for half the human race.  Here is a great one.. Monty had a double to deceive the Germans. For British Prime Minister Winston Churchill's convenience, an actor performed radio broadcasts of some of his best remembered speeches. Great leaders find their own solutions to the problem of having to be in two places simultaneously. Adolf Hitler, Führer of Germany, employed a whole zodiac of Doppelgänger from dire necessity. Both the Allies and his own generals kept trying to kill him.
By the summer of 1944, Adolf Hitler was dying slowly. Doubles took his place when illness as well as convenience ruled out a personal public appearance. Dr. Rolf Marzius was keeping him alive. Reluctant Waffen SS recruit Sturmbannführer Oskar Weinkenner found himself in the role of bodyguard to a man whose life could be as important to the Reich as the Führer's.
This episode of the war's most closely guarded secret opens with the Stauffenberg Bomb Plot. It is the story of the men of the Reichssicherheitsdienst, the doubles, and the doctor, who moved in the highest government and military circles as they carried out their principal duty: preserving Adolf Hitler's life, knowing that the price of both success and failure could be their own death.
Warning:  The navigation leaves much to be desired.  It is found near the bottom.

Queen of Heaven is a fascinating biography of Mary Magdalene based on ancient texts from Egypt, Babylon, Sumer, Israel, Canaan and Greek, Hittite, Arabic, and Indian myths.Mary Magdalene is probably one of the most used, abused and mis-used of all the characters in the New Testament. She is reviled as a harlot and praised as a saint, but Mary was far more than such overt simplification could ever describe. More than the Shakti of the Son of the Living God, first and foremost, she was an influential woman of her times, real and passionate. For the first time her story is revealed, her life chronicled. Following Miriam from birth to death, the novel vividly depicts the religious milieu from which Christianity developed, and reveals the many sources of Christian thought and iconography.

Death is a Debt:  In the harsh world of Regency London, Major Villers Croft promises to protect a mysterious lady from danger and then carelessly betrays her. Later she is found dead. Was it an accident, or murder? Who was she? What danger was she in? And from whom? Croft's guilt and sense of honour compels him to discover who she was and how and why she died.
From the the slums of Seven Dials to the English countryside; from the polite drawing-rooms of Regency society to the rough excitement of a high-stakes curricle race, his search takes him deeper into a world of treachery and evil where the end may be his redemption ...or his death.

The Butler Did It:   “Why is it that I’m taking the train and you get the car again?”
“Well, I have this little thing called a job, sweetie. See, I work, and I buy gas to put in this car. So, because I love you so much, I’m going to brave the horrors of New York traffic while you nap comfortably on the train. Isn’t that so kind of me?”
“So kind. I keep forgetting how much you love me. How about another kiss for the road?” Jared asked as he leaned in toward the open window.
The window nearly decapitated him. He withdrew his head just in time as Monica pushed the button. “Sorry, there’s a one farewell kiss limit in this parking lot. I saw the sign over there by the ticket booth. You’ll just have to wait until Sunday when you come back,” she said coyly.

The Strange Case of the Lost Elvis Diaries    "So . . . the Elvis Diaries. I had heard the rumors of their existence. The story had it that Elvis had kept a journal since he was in elementary school. As far as I knew, though, they were just that--rumors. Maybe this was a hoax like those Hitler diaries some crackpot tried to palm off on that German magazine some years back.  But hoax or not, I have to admit I was intrigued. The truth is, I needed a good story and needed it real bad. Recently, I'd been suffering from what might be called a receding by-line. My last three story ideas hadn't panned out and the last one that actually got published--"The Eight Faces of Earl"--was a major disappointment. It was the story of Earl Buskin, a man who had eight distinct personalities, all of them, unfortunately, incredibly boring.  So if the Elvis diaries really did exist and I could get my hands on 'em, I might just have the story of the century."

The Undivided: A free online novel by C Woodcock "I find that there is a tendency amongst people to label a thoughtful person 'the philosophical type,' as if implying him to be an extremist, as if elevating the process of thinking and reasoning to specialist skills, and thus excusing the layperson from having to partake in such activities."

The Forgotten King is a history of the Dark Ages, of the forgotten ages that followed the fall of Rome. While the Roman Empire collapsed, however, civilization did not; for it grew again on Atilta, an island nation off the coast of Europe, clothed with an ancient forest and crowned by a wild, maritime metropolis. Yet Atilta was also a land of tyrants: one on earth and one in heaven. Those who rebelled against the earthly tyrant colonized the canopy of the forest, living in the leaves to escape his heavy hand. But, their King murdered and their Admiral enslaved on a wandering ship, they did not dare to take the field against the army of the usurper king.

Child of Wonder-- by Italian-American author and educator Raphael Ferraro, is a poignant narrative about a young boy whose unfortunate circumstances of birth and odd appearance mark him as an object of ridicule and scorn. The action of this inspiring story focuses on the extraordinary adventures and the mystical experiences of this sensitive young Italian whose prayers and faith both sustain him and transform him on his unique spiritual journey through Southern Italy. Blended into the narrative are the fascinating folkways and beliefs of the region.

The novel DARKZOO had seven main characters, and the reader could click to switch between the Point of View characters. Further, each of the POV tracks had a unique sub-plot. Most of the tracks were 'mainstream adventure' but two of them (werewolf stories) were 'fantasy'. I encountered problems during the writing. Cumulatively, The novel required 239 interlocking chapters. I spent more energy on assembling the chapters into the jigsaw-like framework, than I spent on writing it well. It was an experiment though, and I thought I could get away with less than stellar prose.

My Name's Jack-- by Charles Cripps, of the Nassau County Writers and Poets Society. Jack Robinson Able, an abused teenager, runs away to find a home, adventure, and romance on a tall ship at sea in the modern day Caribbean. The story includes a hair raising encounter with modern day pirates.

The Miniature Man:  Julian Papp found redemption in the game of chess, a kind of intellectual redemption that helped offset the shame and ridicule he often faced as an albino. With his unique ability to achieve a state of perfect concentration, Julian was an awesome prodigy--until, that is, he suffered his first epileptic seizure. Suddenly stripped of his chess-playing prowess, Julian attempts suicide, and finds himself at St. Francis Sanitarium, an institution run by an order of nuns. It is here that he meets Marcy--an enigma to those trying to help her, an adolescent who has blotted all memory of an undisclosed past. When put under hypnosis, in an effort to reclaim her lost identity, the young girl seeks the protection of an aged wood-carver, The Miniature Man, who offers her hints about events she has repressed. He also suggests that Julian may hold a key. Julian thus begins his most significant game, one in which both he and Marcy will learn much about themselves--and about the unavoidable pain of being human.

Luminarium   Medieval, Renaissance and 17th century English literature

A Half Life of One:  Things were so bad it was hard to think straight any more. From down below in reception he could hear the angry buzz arising from the steady stream of creditors demanding to be paid. He knew there was no cash to pay them. Any minute now the electricity could be cut off and the building would grind to a halt. Eventually even the phones would fall silent. Starved of cash, the oxygen of business, the company was rapidly dying. The bank was his last chance, he had nowhere else to turn. He knew that this meeting was going to be the stage for the most important performance of his life. As long as the bank manager swallowed the story he was about to spin, his thin tale of hope and ultimate redemption. He closed his eyes and tried to shut out the noise of those bloody phones. They didn’t have a job on their books, he’d fired half his staff, and yet it was like bedlam in here.

Sugarloaf Mountain-- by Frits Kruithof is set in Australia. A small town perched high on a mountain range has become the perfect hideout for an organized gang of career criminals. This is hardly a fitting place for a respectable woman to raise her nine-year-old son but it is a place where interesting things happen often and character molding experiences are impossible to avoid.

The first Volume of Queen of Heaven, chronicles Miriam's childhood in Canaan. The Second Volume describes her travels to Egypt and adventures on the Arabian Sea, and the Third, available soon, tells of her encounters with Yeshuah the Nazarene.
