Spot Those Mistakes
And, DELETE Them

© 2004 by Lynda Lotman
www.manuscriptediting.com
Publishing houses receive hundreds of submissions every day. In-house editors are trained to crush the weak and champion the strong. If you are an unpublished writer, you must be meticulously polished and presentable just to get your foot in the door. Your presentation and professionalism define your reputation and, ultimately, your success. Bad spelling and faulty grammar can seriously undermine the impact of your documents and marketing materials.

If you want people to respect your work, it must be properly written and carefully edited. What if your readers can spot grammatical errors that you didn't know were there? What if they see holes in your logic? Or loose ends you forgot to tie up? Every mistake in grammar, spelling, sentence structure, and overall organization, anything that trips up the smooth flow of ideas from you to your reader is a potential minefield. And enough errors can mean failure--regardless of how hard you worked to get your ideas across or how beautiful your published book may appear.

You want the publisher to be captivated by your writing, not assaulted by a litany of mistakes. You may have a terrific story, and even have the talent to tell it, but it's your errors that will be noticed by publishing professionals.
See www.manuscriptediting.com for complete information.

WritersNet(sm): The Internet Directory of Published Writers So far as I'm concerned, if you are a writer, or an agent, or an editor, this is the place to start. Stephan Spencer has done a terrific job here. Listing yourself and your work is made easy and uploads quickly. An editor lets you update, or new and improve your post with ease. I endorse this site wholeheartedly.

Search Me is a whole pageful of the search engines especially designed for those engaged in literary pursuits.

Literary Leaps (http://www.literaryleaps.com/ ) is my first searching tool for publishers.  They are getting bigger and more helpful all the time.

For another source of information, harder to use but more extensive, try your luck at the PMA.

Reader'sNdex is one of the smaller sources of publisher links, and it is good, and it provides other services for authors as well.

To find Canadian publishers, it is Deanna Ramsay's BooksCanada page.

BookZone ( http://www.bookzone.com/ ) has a fascinating collection of unusual books, audiobooks, as well as a collection of articles in its Short Subjects section that helps publishers and authors with the business of publishing.

A new favorite of mine is The Eclectic Writer. The page is laid out in a refreshing manner delightful colors, good descriptions, and great links to the world of writers.

Market Information from INKSPOT... This is one really fantastic resource for anyone to grab hold of.  Loads slowly.

Another fascinating site I have found for writers is novel advice.

Seasoned With Love by Rebecca Johnson-- To everything you cook, add a dash of love.  Have you ever considered publishing an international 998 page cookbook?  I mention Rebecca here because her book reviews have made it up to the top 40 this week at Amazon.com  That means her reviews are being read.  More importantly, she is reviewing G-Rated Books.  A good review from her could well send your book sales spiraling upwards.  Check out the site, sample some of the recipes.

A brand new and dynamic LIST for ebook self-publishers to get on.
Those buying books should check the site out too.

A site for agents to submit:  This publisher promises to publish 500 books this year.   It even offers to pay an advance to the writers.

Here is a clean, easily navigable web site specializing in finding great ebooks for everyone.

Create your own ebooks.   This little dude is easy to use, and assigns your creation an esbn number.  Lin Stone published Water, Water with it, if you want to see a sample.

Click&Copyright:   With so many people attempting to be published, via both traditional and Internet-based means, protecting that work is critical.  "We are committed to helping writers, musicians, artists, web site developers, and entrepreneurs get their dreams off to the right start."

Raab Associates - Author Web Guide This is a cuddly little page that lifts your heart just to visit. It just happens to also be an excellent resource for writers and publishers of children's books, who have their book already published and ready to market.

Children's Writing Resource Center -- Writing for Children has resources designed especially for writers to youth, our most important resource. As far as I'm concerned, you have to be twice as good to write half as much. What I use most here is the current Best Seller List. However, there is nothing shabby about any of the rest of this site either.

The Writer's Forums has a bulletin board for writers specializing in children. Backed by Inksport and The Writers BBS there is actually a bulletin board for just about every genre there.

Garbl's Writing Resources On Line has a good assortment of grammar helpers, and the Lord knows how much writers need to learn good grammar.  "I've added Punctuation in the Grammar category, and Spelling and Vocabulary in the Words category."

I'd also like to note one relatively new link on the Words page that I think is really valuable: Avoiding Insensitive and Offensive Language. It's an essay from the Random House Webster's  Collegiate Dictionary with suggestions for avoiding language that reinforces stereotypes or  excludes and demeans groups of people because of race, sexism, disabilities, sexual orientation or other differences.

Have you read these books yet? Writer's Guide to Book Editors, Publishers, and Literary Agents, by Jeff Herman. This is my most used book. It gives me the facts I need, the editors I want and provides experienced wisdom besides. Best of all, editor's names are in the index so I can look them up.
Fine Tuned Hunting.. A veritable goldmine of publishers wanting novels is found in the NOVEL & SHORT STORY WRITER'S MARKET.  2,200 places to sell your fiction.  This book narrows the gap and the speed with which you can find a publisher for your work.

Another genuinely inspirational book I've bought, given to writers I love, and bought more copies for myself, is HOW TO WRITE FAST WHILE WRITING WELL by David Fryxell. This book has paid for itself over and over again in lessons learned which help me cut to the cleavage ,with a sharpened stone. David shows how to create outlines, how to use outlines, how to know when to quit, how to organize your work, research, and time to get the job done, on time! My writing time was cut in half from the first reading and I have read it several times since, picking up speed as I went.
More books for writers are available by clicking here.

The United States Copyright Office has more information and forms you can download as well.  "To promote the progress of science and useful arts, by securing for limited times to authors and inventors the exclusive right to their respective writings and discoveries"  (U.S. Constitution, Article I, Section 8)

For Writers Only is a beautiful site with lots of links and many references. It is also a great place for publishers of books and magazines to list their home pages and E-mail addresses so that writers and agents can find them. Believe me, we writers and agents WANT to find you.

Sooner or later you will need an expert to quote in some of your writing. Here is the best source I have found. Make this your direct link to 4,000 public relations professionals representing colleges, universities, think tanks, national laboratories, hospitals, non-profit organizations, corporations and public relations agencies.

One of the most fascinating experts I have found individually is Mark W. Lewis, of England. The way he strings information together keeps my eye lunging for the next sentence until my mind is reeling for a break.

NEW Listings

One List is little short of amazing.   Just the writing tips from Jennifer Stewart on deposit there would win an award.  Writers will find a hundred times more.   There are over 235,000 communities and mailing lists on tap from this source.   Registration and exploration are free.

Pilot Search.com a LITERARY SEARCH ENGINE is a marvelous resource for the whole world of writing.

The Electric Works Publishing is a superb site for writers of G-Rated manuscripts wishing to have their books published electronically.  There is no cost for publishing, editing help is available, and the whole site looks good.  "we publish more than just "G" rated books, as long as
the work fits our guidelines, which are included on the page," declares James R. Bohe.

Do you write for children?  Surf over to the Purple Crayon's huge site of articles and other help available.  Harold D. Underdown is an editor at Charlesbridge Publishing.

Get your PRs out free of charge at the Online Press Release Distribution Center.  Quite a few releases are already up.  I enjoyed the trip and found releases of interest to the Literary field.

The Publishing Law Center. Packed with helpful information for publishing companies large and small.

Inscriptions has captivated me for three hours.
What a delightful page!
It is full of writing/editing job postings,
articles on how to make money as a writer,
and other helpful advice.  Check it out.

The 6 ft Ferret has helpful advice and information to anyone wanting to start a writer's group or build traffic to an existing one.  I found great links there of interest to our community as well.

With 74 submissions a day lately I thought placing an ad for more business was the last thing I wanted to do.  But I investigated the Writer's Web Site and found that I was quite frankly impressed with the material I found offered there. Agents, producers and publishers alike will be flocking to this site.

Browzer Books and Hard Shell Books are offering authors two new ways of making money from their writing.  Hard Shell has an air about the site that makes me trust them.

Find out what Hollywood is buying.
