Travel Writing is easily the most exciting and personally rewarding kind of writing you can engage in. You get to do something you love, and you get paid for it. Once you have a few regular outlets for your work you can tell owners and managers of the places you want to write about that you are there to do a story and you will find the red carpet is rolled out for you. Kathleen Peddicord. from the travel division of Agora Inc. says: "Successful Travel Writers have it made. Once you are established as a successful travel writer you could be invited to take FREE CRUISES on the world’s most luxurious ships, hitting all of the hot spots in the Caribbean, visit Australia, New Zealand, France, England, South America, Africa, Asia and other romantic points of interest, and get paid for it. "Travel stories about the fabulous hideaways and hidden treasures of the world are desperately needed. Travel editors today are actually having a hard time finding people to write these articles. Naturally, GOOD writing is required, as always." Where do you start? Well, you could start right where you live. Chances are there are over 100 wonderful travel stories for you to write that are right close to you. Just start asking questions, in local restaurants, Better Business Bureaus, Chambers of Commerce, Visitor's Centers. And, if you want to travel farther afield I can show you how to get there much cheaper by air than you ever dreamed of.
The Travel Writer's Guide, by Gordon Burgett, taught me the basics of SELLING what you write before you go traveling. I have read the book all the way through about three times now, and when I take a long trip I take it along for company when I get time to rest. Ask your library for a copy. And that's one more thing about writing, you can do stories on how RESTFUL an area is. Of course you need to rest there to make it truthful, right? The last time I went to do a story on Robbers Cave Oklahoma my health suddenly turned bad and I had to rest quite a bit. So, I sat down and engaged numerous people in conversations regarding where they were from, and what THEY found delightful at Robbers Cave. Another thing, the more experience (older) you get the better you can write and the more editors know you can write well for them. Stories that once took me a month to write can now be turned out in less than a day -- and my writing is better now. |

Here is a treat for you. Water fowl have fascinated men for centuries. Their ability to rise into the clouds and see far beyond the horizons that hem us in tugs at our hearts and strains our imaginations. Arkansas provides a unique opportunity to get close to water fowl in their own element. Because of its dense population of ducks Stuttgart is the duck capital of the world and just a few miles away, Brinkley is the goose capital of the world. Citizens in these two areas are blessed to see the skies darken with the solid beat of wings. Some of the flocks are large enough to cover a forty acre field so thickly you can't toss a rock in anywhere without hitting a fowl. The whole state of Arkansas is host to ducks and geese. But in this region nature itself has provided natural reasons for the water fowl to migrate here. Farmers here prepare their croplands to accommodate these annual visitors. They feel a solemn responsibility to continue providing habitat for the waterfowl to thrive upon. Food is left, just for them. Water is hedged up so it can't escape, just for them. Ducks Unlimited and similar organizations are working to make sure the targets continue in plentiful supply. Besides the hunters and the sportsmen there are also those of us who simply want to see a million majestic heads bobbing among the reeds, to perhaps be among the last souls privileged to see this natural wonder. The self-guided tour outlined here is a triangle that starts on the eastern edge of North Little Rock, runs to Stuttgart, then to Brinkley, and back again to North Little Rock. Naturally, the best time of year to see winter waterfowl is between November and late February.
